Description:
Born in the Bronx, Robert Schimmel's "big break" came in 1986 when Rodney Dangerfield invited Robert to perform on his HBO Young Comedians Special (also debuting Andrew "Dice" Clay, Bill Hicks, Dom Irrera, and Carol Leifer), which led to to his critically-acclaimed Showtime specials Hard Core in the Big Apple and Robert Schimmel: Guilty As Charged.
While a staff writer on the hit series In Living Color, an impromptu set at a local club generated the opportunity to perform in Scotland at the Edinburgh Festival in 1994, where he was nominated for the coveted Perrier Award. In 1997 & 2002, he headlined at Montreal's Juste Pour Rire (Just For Laughs), the world's largest international comedy festival.
Red-hot word-of-mouth sparked the attention of major media, resulting in editorial pieces in Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, and US News & World Report, and a four-page feature profile in Playboy Magazine. Consistent delivery has made him a regular on several shows, including The Howard Stern Show and Late Night with Conan O'Brien, on which he has appeared seven times!
Robert Schimmel has proven that the best comedy comes from the truth. His all-too-real brand of humor, which spotlights relationships and sex, has put him at the forefront of the comedy circuit. Other TV shows Schimmel has been seen on include Hollywood Squares and The Simpsons, and he has been seen in the films Scary Movie 2, A Low Down Dirty Shame, and Blankman, as well as at the US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, where he delivered a stellar performance. Robert's CD releases include Robert Schimmel Comes Clean, followed by If You Buy This CD, I Can Get This Car, which helped to land the performer the prestigious Best Male Stand-Up Comic Award at The 13th Annual American Comedy Awards and his latest release Robert Schimmel: Unprotected, recorded from his HBO special Unprotected. Schimmel also taped a pilot for FOX in October 2002 titled The Pitch, from producer Mike Scully (of The Simpsons fame, also a producer of Robert's first pilot for FOX, titled Schimmel).
The "C" word has become one of the cornerstones of Schimmel's act. He openly jokes about his bout with Lymphoma Cancer and being faced with the possibility of having only 6 months to live. Now hitting the two year mark of complete remission, Robert's personal quest is to bring hope to others who are faced with the illness, proving laughter is powerful medicine. His national crusade to build a CD and audio book library in cancer infusion centers across the country has been a huge success. He has collected hundreds of CDs and personally purchased Discmen for patients to use during their long chemotherapy treatments.

Because there is so much interest in this book I'm scheduling 2 seperate meetups for this book. One on Wednesday and then one on Thursday. Please do not sign up for both! Closer to the date if there are free spots and you want to come to both we'll make that happen. The Book: The last, and most famous, of D. H. Lawrences novels, Lady Chatterleys Lover was published in 1928 and banned in England and the United States as pornographic. While sexually tame by todays standards, the book is memorable for better reasonsLawrences masterful and lyrical prose, and a vibrant story that takes us bodily into the world ofits characters. As the novel opens, Constance Chatterley finds herself trapped in an unfulfilling marriage to a rich aristocrat whose war wounds have left him paralyzed and impotent. After a brief but unsatisfying affair with a playwright, Lady Chatterley enjoys an extremely passionate relationship with the gamekeeper on the family estate, Oliver Mellors. As Lady Chatterley falls in love and conceives a child with Mellors, she moves from the heartless, bloodless world of the intelligentsia and aristocracy into a vital and profound connection rooted in sexual fulfillment. Through this novel, Lawrence attempted to revive in the human consciousness an awareness of savage sensuality, a sensuality with the power to free men and women from the enslaving sterility of modern technology and intellectualism. Perhaps even more relevant today than when it first appeared, Lady Chatterleys Lover is a triumph of passion and an erotic celebration of life. The Author: D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930), was born in a Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, village in central England on September 11, 1885. His father was a coal miner, his mother, a former schoolteacher. His parents were poor and quarrelled a lot, and he was often sick. His writing was encouraged by Ford Madox Ford and Edward Garnett. Lawrence's early years formed the basis of his first major work, Sons and Lovers, a semi-autobiography which was published when he was 28. D.H. Lawrence trained to be a teacher at Nottingham University. Later he ran off with Frieda von Richthofen, wife of Ernest Weekley, the aristocratic German wife of a professor there. After her divorce, they married in 1914. His next novel, The Rainbow, was seized by the police because it explored marital and sexual relations, used swear words, and talked openly about sex. The book is about two sisters growing up in the north of England. He was prosecuted for obscenity and left England and lived in Italy where he produced a sequel, Women in Love, which became a popular film starring Alan Bates, Oliver Reed and Glenda Jackson. D.H. Lawrence and his wife Frieda travelled a lot, including in Australia, Italy and North America. They finally settled in Italy after he was told he was dying from tuberculosis. In Italy, he wrote his most controversial book Lady Chatterley's Lover. The book was first privately printed in Italy. It tells of the affair between a married wealthy woman and a man who works for his husband's estate. The book was made into a movie. It was only until 30 years after D.H. Lawrence's death that the uncut version of the book was published. Believed to be an obscene material, the publishers were accused, but later acquitted after a sensational trial. It makes one think if there ever was an influence from Flaubert's Madame Bovary in D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley. In 1928, D.H. Lawrence was further prosecuted for obscenity over the private publication of Lady Chatterley's Lover in Florence. Opinion is divided over Lawrence's worth as a writer. Evidently, he had strong effect on the younger intellectuals in his time, challenging them to interpret the human emotions on the higher level of consciousness. He died at the age of 44, with his last years spent in Italy.
