For those of you not familiar with their work, the name says it all:
from Bad Boys Entertainment, P. Diddy's rap label, to German artist
and founder of social sculpture Joseph Beuys, the work attempts to
connect 'the ghetto' and a social critique of urban planning as
physical and symbolic ostracization. There, the banlieue becomes a
paradigm for 'l'étranger'.

The work recalls both Tibetan death rites and photography's ghost, the X ray. And Rineke Dijkstra's delicate, haunting Cibachrome portraits of young people alone, clad in bathing suits and standing by the shoreline at Coney Island or in Odessa, are some of the show's most moving newer pieces, evoking the fleeting, awkward grace of adolescent self-consciousness.

"We’re going back to basics, old-school, the essence of the Museum of Useful Things - and returning to where it began - the web. Of course that was over eleven years ago. New developments will allow us to have the site we envisioned years ago - a forum/store/repository of “useful things”. We are presenting an edited collection of our favorite MUT products, some old, some brand new, and some of our own design. On our blog we can now share our vintage collection of useful items and industrial images and look forward to seeing/hearing about yours."

The Mexican Suitcase, a groundbreaking exhibition revealing the most famous group of recovered negatives of the twentieth century, will be on view at the International Center of Photography. Considered lost since 1939, the so-called Mexican Suitcase is in fact three boxes containing 4,500 negatives documenting the Spanish Civil War by Robert Capa, Chim (David Seymour), and Gerda Taro.

On September 1, 1910, the Toronto Daily Star headlined a cost of $23,000,000 to build the Toronto subway system. This was an attention catching amount of money one hundred years ago. The city council was also advised to buy the above ground lines to avoid competition from the existing Toronto railway system. An article on the same page discussed vacation typhoid. Typhoid is a form of salmonella.

Really interesting animation/video used in exhibition at the National Maritime Museum in Rotterdam. I really like the way collage is used here with fun images taken from old photos and illustrations. It has a 'Gilliam-esque' look to it, but a bit more elegantly produced. Nice example for Myths & Legends workshop.

Eye Spy features engaging works that explore the act of perception. Through manipulation of light, form, color and line, leading contemporary artists show viewers how perception is based as much on what we think we should see as on what we actually see. Abstract sculptures create surprisingly recognizable shadows, for example; holographic images fool us into thinking we're seeing 3-D. On view in PEM's interactive Art & Nature Center, Eye Spy encourages visitors to examine how perception and illusion influence the way we interpret the world.

Visiting a museum is relatively cheap, easy, and offers at least the hint of a redeeming purpose, so it’s no surprise that the MSI isn’t hurting, nor are museums generally: over half of them nationwide reported attendance increases last year, and I’d bet MSI's 2 million-plus annual visitors make it one of America's most popular. But it's never too early to think about new visitors, nor too bold to consider improving on really good numbers. Bill Gates' adage that when companies realize they're in trouble it's already too late to do anything about it probably applies to museums, too.
